Ans. Mesosome is a specialised membranous structure formed in a prokaryotic cell by the extension of the plasma membrane into the cell.
Some of the important functions mesosome are:
(i) It helps in the synthesis of the cell wall, DNA replication and equal distribution of chromosomes into the daughter cells.
(ii) It also increases the surface area of the plasma membrane and enzymatic content.
(iii) It helps in respiration as well as secretion processes.
Q. How do neutral solutes move across the plasma membrane? Can the polar molecules also move across it in the same way? If not, then how are these transported across the membrane?
Ans. Neutral solutes may move across the plasma membrane by the process of simple diffusion or osmosis (in case of waster). Diffusion is the process of movement of molecules from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration whereas the movement of water along the concentration gradient is termed as osmosis. But the polar molecules require some carrier-proteins to facilitate their movement across the non-polar lipid bilayer.
