Founding and Early Years

Mulayam Singh Yadav founded the Samajwadi Party in 1992 to represent Dalits and lower castes in Uttar Pradesh.

Rise to Power in Uttar Pradesh

In 1993, SP first ruled over Uttar Pradesh by forming a coalition with BSP with Mulayam Singh Yadav as the Chief Minister.

Leadership Transition and Challenges

From 2012, Akhilesh Yadav was the Chief Minister but the party had faced challenges and defeats due to BJP after 2017.

Best Performance in Lok Sabha

After winning 38 seats out of 80 seats, the Samajwadi Party (SP) led by Akhilesh Yadav had its greatest Lok Sabha performance ever, which happened in Uttar Pradesh.

Previous Success in 2004

SP’s previous best was in 2004 with 35 seats. It became the largest party in Uttar Pradesh and the third-largest nationally.
