India's population is expected to peak at 1.701 billion in 2062, according to the UN's World Population Prospects report released on July 11, 2024. This gives India 38 years before it reaches its highest population number.
According to the report, India is currently the most populated country in the world and is predicted to stay that way until the end of the century.
What did the Report Say?
The UN data shows that India's population will start to decrease between January and July 2062. India is likely to add 222,000 people to its population during that year.
However, after the year 2062, the country will see a continuous decline in its population. In 2063, the population will decline by about 115,000. The decline will continue, with a reduction of 4,37,000 people in 2064 and 7,93,000 in 2065.
Life Expectancy Returns to Post-pandemic
According to recent research, the average global life expectancy saw another increase in 2024. It rose to 73.3 years, up from 70.9 years during the pandemic period.
India: Home to 1.5 Billion People
The report also revealed that India is currently the most populous country in the world, with a population of 1.451 billion people. With 1.419 billion inhabitants, China comes in second, while the US comes in third with 345 million.
It is interesting to note that the report suggests that Pakistan will become the third country with the largest population, surpassing the United States by 2054. Pakistan is expected to be home to 389 million people in the next 30 years. However, India and China will retain its position of first and second by that year.
World Population to Reach Its Peak In mid-2080s
The population of the world is predicted to rise from 8.2 billion in 2024 to 10.3 billion in the middle of the 1980s.
The UN reported that by 2100, the Earth's population is now projected to be 700 million fewer, or 6% smaller than previously estimated a decade ago.
"By the late 2070s, it is estimated that there will be more people over the age of 65 years—2.2 billion—than children under 18."
The UN predicted that the world's population will start to decline in 2083, with about 10.2 billion people living there. Currently, the global population stands at 8.16 billion.
Global Child Birth Rate: Current Situation
The report also highlights that the birth rate is decreasing worldwide. It states that, on average, women are having one less child now compared to 1990. In over half of all countries and regions, the average live birth rate per woman is now less than 2.1, which is just at the level required for a population to maintain its size over time without immigration.
Furthermore, about one-fifth of all countries and regions, including China, Italy, South Korea, and Spain, have "ultra-low" fertility rates, with fewer than 1.4 live births per woman during a lifetime.
